President Trump Supports States’ Rights for Regulating Marijuana

by Faith Fidura April 25, 2018

On April 11, 2018, President Donald Trump promised Republican Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado that he would support efforts to protect states that have legalized marijuana, ending a standoff on the Department of Justice nominations.

cgEver since January, when Attorney General Jeff Sessions removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from interfering with states that have legalized marijuana, Gardner has been pushing for a change.

Gardner said he would block all Department Of Justice nominations in response to Sessions’ action in January. With Trump’s statement and support, Gardner is now backing down from his nominee blockade.

“President Trump has assured me that he will support a federalism-based legislative solution to fix this states’ rights issue once and for all,” Gardner said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders reported that Gardner’s account was accurate and the president supports states’ rights regarding the matter.

After all, Trump believes states should be able to decide on their own laws regarding marijuana, as he said during his 2016 presidential campaign. “I’m a states person, it should be up to the states, absolutely,” he told an interviewer in Colorado.

Gardner hopes to introduce bipartisan legislation to keep the federal government from interfering in state marijuana markets.

Marijuana has been fully legalized in eight states, and the majority of states allow some form of marijuana use. Learn more about each state’s marijuana laws here.
