Ohio Medical Marijuana Business Licensing Update

Ohio legalized medical marijuana when Governor John Kasich signed House Bill 523 into law on June 8th, 2016. Since then, the state has been creating the regulatory framework necessary for implementing the new program and licensing the businesses responsible for growing, processing, and selling the medical marijuana to qualified patients.

The state initially had a program launch date of September 8, 2018, but recently announced they will not have a fully operational medical marijuana market in place by then. While the state hasn’t announced a definite new launch date, we are anticipating more information to be released soon as additional marijuana businesses are receiving their licenses and approvals to operate.

So far, 3 out of the 26 cultivation licensees have received their approval to operate, and 9 out of the 40 processing licenses have been awarded. Please see below for updated announcements of the processing licenses:

Announced August 16, 2018
Green Investment Partners LLC (Columbus, Franklin County)

Standard Wellness Company LLC (Gibsonburg, Sandusky County)

Announced August 3, 2018

Ohio Grown Therapies, LLC (Johnstown, Licking County)

Fire Rock Processing Ltd. (Columbus, Franklin County)

Ohio Green Grow LLC (Toledo, Lucas County)

Greenleaf Therapeutics, LLC (Middlefield, Geauga County)
Grow Ohio Pharmaceuticals, LLC (Newtown Township, Muskingum County)

Standard Farms Ohio LLC (Garfield Heights, Cuyahoga County)
Corsa Verde, LLC (Columbus, Franklin County)

As the state confers with the new businesses on their operational timelines, they will be able to produce a more realistic program launch date. We anticipate Ohio to award the remaining processing licenses on an as-need basis. For example, if only three cultivation centers have gone through the Approval to Operate so far, the supply of raw plant wouldn't demand all 40 processing centers to be getting into operation just yet, which explains the awarding of only 9 processing licenses so far.
